Release....
So I was going to order day old chicks from Miller Hatcheries and having them delivered via Canada Post or picking them up at Peavy Mart or UFA. After a conversation with them we decided to pick them up ourselves. They had 2 weeks old chicks which was the plan when we left. When we got their they had some pullets and cockerels on special. After some discussion I settled on 18 Red Sussex cross pullets born March 10. The two cockerels were thrown in free. I then got 25 broilers. The tally is now:
25 Broilers - to be butchered in June
18 Red Sussex Cross - being kept for eggs (brown)
2 Red Sussex Cross cockerels
9 White Leghorns - being kept for eggs (white)
Ashley was a pro with the little chicks in the house but when the bigger ones were let free...she didn't know what to think. Her reactions were funny. Natasha was excited. The two cockerels are named Noodle (Natashas pick) and Pete (after my great grandmother always saying...for petes sake) I also named my favorite pullet Mabel. To me chickens means Grandma Knapp and while you may think it insulting...I think she would smile. I am sure she is laughing down at her two little chicken farmers. Since then Ashley is at ease and picks up the chickens like a pro...even the roosters. Natasha may get the name the "Rooster Whisperer" because they are so at ease with her.
The broilers and young leghorns were kept apart from the pullets/cockerels in my parents dog kennel. They lasted about a week in there before getting much to crowded at which point I built a fence across the middle. I have to build a roost and laying boxes as the pullets should start laying (small eggs) in the next couple of weeks.

Cleaning the Coop
Two weeks ago Thursday my mom came over and helped me clean out the coop. It was a big job and we accomplished about 95% of cleaning it out. There is still lots of stuff to dump but at least the chickens are in there. The girls needed a watermelon break from their hard job of playing. Who would have known the next day (and next 4) would be spent under a weather watch and blanket of snow.

Lack of Posts
Geez I have been doing poorly lately. Adam has been home so my time has been consumed with him. That and the weather we experienced left me very unmotivated to post anything.

Ready
As many people know Natasha will be attending Kindergarden this fall. She is very excited and has been wanting to go since she first saw the school in Bawlf.
Today, while Ashley had a brief nap, we were cuddling on the recliner downstairs. I said to her (jokingly) "I don't think she should go to kindergarden."
She slid off my knee, looked at me and said "I have to go. And just think all the fun you will have with Ashley."
Seems at 4 she has it all figured out.

Worried....
The weather has been horrible with farther north being hit the hardest. Yesterday highway 63 was closed due to dangerous driving conditions. Tomorrow my dear husband comes home on the very highway.

Long Distance Relative...
We got home from the farm with an hour or so to spare before we got visitors. Adams Great Aunt from Australia is on her first visit to Canada. She is 81 and looking fantastic!! I dressed the girls in the dresses she made when Natasha was just born. She informed us those were the last dresses she made....HOW LUCKY for us!!! She was very touched and happy to see them used. Here is a picture with the girls and their GREAT GREAT Aunt Renee (pronouced Ree-nee).

The FARM
The First Day
A trip to the farm is always an event and days are full full full with nothingness really. Thursday morning I got up and organized before the girls woke up (I HATE leaving a messy house). The plan early in the week was to drive through Sherwood Park and pick up Adams cheque and head out from there. Had we done that it was on the road by 845am. Since we could not pick up the cheque we headed out from our place. My mom drove out here and left her car. We aimed for no later that 1100am and we gone by 1130 (on time for us). Really there was no real rush so leaving late did not put anyone out on the other end. We got to Glendon around 200pm and went straight to Grandma Graces house where we quickly learned a new calf was born around noon. We chatted with Grandma Grace, saw the pups and then I went to pick up Emily from school. I zipped to Baba and Gidos farm to turn up the heat and plug in the fridge. We got back to Grandma and was greeted by Evan who showed up on the quad from my Aunt and Uncles (AKA Daryl and Lori). The girls were getting desperate to get to "Emilys" house so Emily took them over on the quad and we followed shortly in the Envoy. We poured some drinks and shot the shit in the shop until it was time to leave back to Baba and Gidos to sleep. Emily decided she wanted to come and have a sleep over with us girls. We watched some tv before calling it a night.

On my way....
to my parents house and I spot these in the park. I think (almost know) one of the main reasons they choose their current house was the yard and location. They have no neighbours behind them as it backs onto a part of the golf course. Because of their location deers are seen strolling the streets, parks, yards, etc. The deers even make their way into their backyard and leave little momentos of their visit.
