Yum Yum

So today was The Great Chicken Run of 2009. 153 broilers were delivered to St. Paul for processing. St. Paul is one of two (in Alberta), federally inspected poultry processors. All birds are inspected by a licensed inspector. I was told for every 100birds, expect to have 2-3 birds culled.

I had NO birds culled of 153. My mortality rate was less than 2% which is very good when compared to 6 or 7%.

I learned a lot more today about raising birds and processing them. I met a wonderful husband and wife who answered all of my questions honestly and openly. They have been raising broilers for 10 years and will raise at least 600 this year.

I am very happy that my broilers are finished for 2009 but I look forward to doing it again next year (and maybe even doing more).

The pictures aren't great but document some of our day.

A special thanks to my mom who drove there and back to St. Paul with me.

The whole process was quite interesting. An older gentleman (20 years employed there) answered ALL of my questions and showed me the different stages of processing. I was completely fascinated!!
