For years I worked towards goals. It was something that came naturally to me. It was something that kept me focused. It gave me determination and dedication. When I left swimming behind, I left behind goal setting. I needed a break from so much structure. I lived the life for 16 years (ish) and I just wanted to fly by the seat of my pants.
After 10 great years of free flying I have found myself back with goals. Back with dedication and determination. Back to something natural for me. That is why I have chosen Triathlon. I like the fact that training has diversity. It's not just all running. Or all swimming. There is a mix of three sports and that keeps me from getting bored. It is quite a jump for me as I was a sprinter in my swimming days. 100m was my event. So some may laugh at my choice to do a 7hr + race when my "baby" was just over a minute. I was never that good at pacing. I always like to go like hell and hang on for dear life.
It doesn't have to be complicated. It doesn't have to be an intense race. Pick something and work towards it. Don't worry about the end result but bask in the joy of getting there. Be proud of the work you are putting in. There will be bad days. Days I don't want to swim or bike or run. Days where the first step, first pedal, and first stroke require extreme effort. But then I will have days where everything is effortless. Everything moves and works together for a great workout. Remember those great days to help you get through the hard ones.
Remember that greatness is relative. You don't have to be Wayne, or Tiger or Phelps. Find your greatness and nurture it!! Your greatness might be laughable to a *pro* but your greatness will be an inspiration to someone else.
Happy goal setting, happy training, happy reaching, and happy dreaming.
