Anyway I went back to fill up the waterers because tomorrow we are headed to Edmonton (I am seeing the Dark Knight in Imax, my mom has a follow up eye appointment, and we are hitting a hopping garage sale). I was checking around and noticed a little something on the ground. I wasn't sure so I went closer and to my wonderful surprise was a little brown egg. MY FIRST ONE!!! I have been waiting and waiting and the day has come. I know they don't really start great production until their second year but still MY FIRST EGG from my first flock of chickens.

Sad then Happy
Today when I let my chickens out our head rooster, Noodle (the big one) did not come out right away. Normally he is the first one out or within the first five. After watching for a couple of minutes and him still not surfacing I thought "what the hell" and went inside. I found him behind where he usually perches but still with enough room to get out. I made him a little more room and was on my way believing he would be on his way outside to join his ladies. I came back to the coop to investigate some wild cackling and he still was not outside. I went in and he was still in the same spot so I pushed him out to see what the problem was. I couldn't see very well but saw enough to know he was punctured in the rear area. When I went back later to put the chickens in he was nearly dead...poor guy. I am not sure what happened. I am not sure if a cock fight took place and he was injured. I can't understand why this big, mean rooster would just allow himself to be picked on. There was enough food and water and he was fine last night when I coralled them in. I am at a loss and unfortunately don't know enought about chickens yet to figure this out. The laying hens and rooster were picking on the broilers when I had them and ended up killing a couple of those but nothing has happened since we butchered the lot of broilers. Anyway I still have 3 roosters left but they are just white and I really liked our big, cock with the walk, Noodle.
